What the Internet’s DNS is

• A systematic namespace called the domain name space

• Different people or organisations are responsible for different parts of the namespace

• Information is associated with each name

• A set of conventions for using the information

• A distributed database system

• Protocols that allow retrieval of information, and synchronisation between servers
