Introduction

This half day supplemental session is part of the AfNOG 2007 Workshop on Network Technology, held in conjunction with the AfNOG meeting in Abuja, Nigeria, in April 2007.

A half-day session before the formal start of the AfNOG 2007 workshop is held for those students needing some intensive, hands-on training to introduce them to core UNIX operating system concepts. The flavor of UNIX used in this session is FreeBSD.

The topics covered include: Operating System Commands; Directory Structures; Disk Partitioning Schemes; vi Editor Usage; Finding System Information; Software Installation Methods; Permissions and Files; Network Configuration; Processes and Process Initialization; System Shutdown and Restart Concepts;

The core topics are how UNIX works, directory structures, basic operating system commands and the usage of the vi editor.

Who should attend: AfNOG 2007 attendees who are not proficient at with the use of the UNIX or Linux operating system.

Prerequisites: Basic computer experience.
